Objectives of the computing project

The aim of this project is to create a computing program for evaluation of the population status of the brown bears in Bulgaria based on integration of mathematical and statistical algorithms and using pre-collected data from monitoring studies

Application's description

One of the best brown bear (Ursus arctos ) habitats in Europe are located in Bulgaria. They are situated in the mountain massifs – Rhodopa, Stara planina, Rila, Pirin, Vitosha. Brown Bear is a one of the priority species for conservation of mammals in the European Union.

In the last three years using the transect method (collection of traces of brown bear on predefined set of routes in their habitats) scientists from the Bulgarian academy of Science started to estimate brown bear population in Bulgarian. In this study we will use the collection data from the national monitoring to create software for computing estimation of the population of the specie. Some statistical algorithms are currently developed. The PSoBBB application needs of computing power additional tests using simulation and real data.

Results expected in the allocation period

As a final result of the PSoBBB application is to produce a software, which will use as input files real data from the national monitrings of the species. The software will collect different mathematical and statistical algorithms which will estimate:

• the size of the population throughout the country;

• trends in population development over time;

• density and structure of the main breeding subpopulation.

The acquired output information based of our application will be used by Bulgarian governmental organizations for elaboration of plans for management of the protected habitats, the population of the specie as well as for regulation of the investment projects therein.
